Preparation for Testing



Patient/User Preparation
Various medications or supplements taken by the patient/user may have an impact on the results of the test. Birth control pills often produces elevated levels of copper in the blood. Drugs taken for high blood pressure frequently contain diuretics which increase the amount of liquid discharged and dilute the urine. The intake of Vitamin C should be discontinued 3 days before the test. It is also recommended that use of iron and trace element supplements be stopped for a few days before the test. The patient/user is advised to limit the intake of liquids 24 hours prior to the test.

Urine Specimen Preparation
The urine to be tested should come from first morning urine. Urine samples taken during the day may be tested but the results might be less accurate. Only about 30 ml. of the urine sample is required for each test.

For an "enhanced" determination of the presence of copper ions in the cellular tissues of the body, consider using DMSA (about 1 gm) over a period of one day to collect urine samples for screening with the Copper Test kit.
Caution: Do not use DMSA for more than a day and not recommended for pregnant women and mothers who are breast-feeding.

Water Preparation
No preparation is necessary. The tap or other water collected can be tested and the reaction (result) would be immediate. Always use first morning water sample from faucet or tap

Dust, Dirt or Other Materials (paint, rice, milk, food, etc.) Specimen Preparation
Take a small amount of the material to be tested and place in a plastic container. Add about 30 ml. of distilled water to the material. Shake the contents vigorously and allow to settle overnight (at least 24 hours). Screen the water the solution for presence of copper.

Dishes or glasses
Use only distilled water. Pour distilled water into the glass or dish to be tested. Let the solution to stand for at least 12 hours before testing the solution.


Preparation of Test Solutions
i) Remove the small vial, the pipette and indicator stick from the large test tube.
ii) Cut the pH paper into several smaller pieces
iii) In the empty large test-tube, add 5 ml. of the solution to be tested.
iv) Using the pipette, add 3 drops of reagent 1 in vial with the clear cap to the solution to be tested in the large test-tube.
v) Check the pH of the solution in the large test tube with a piece of the pH paper. If the solution is alkalline, add another 2 drops of reagent 1 as in step (iv)
vi) Check the pH of the solution as in step (v) and repeat same procedure if colour of pH paper is not pink or red (ie., not acidic)
