Antioxidants counter excessive Free Radicals Activity
Monitor your need for Antioxidants
The skin that surrounds a cell controls what goes in and out of it. The active cell membrane is made up of lipids (Cholesterol), proteins
and water. It is important that this function can be carried out efficiently. Failure results in the cell not getting vital nutrients and
disposal of waste materials (toxins). The consequence is cell degeneration.
Antioxidants effectively lock onto free radicals preventing their destructive action. Antioxidants can be categorized as:
- water-soluble; or
- fat-soluble
and divided according to source of origin.
Antioxidants within the body consist essentially of:
- superoxide dimutase (SOD) – prevents the damage caused by the toxic oxygen molecule known as superoxide. SOD occurs naturally in barley, broccoli,
cabbage, wheatgrass, Brussels sprouts and green plants – phytonutrients
- glutathione – is an amino acid which is converted by our bodies into glutathione peroxidase, a powerful antioxidant. Some of the over-the-counter drug
such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen may deplete glutathione levels. Glutathione is a major cellular cleanser and a free radical scavenger. It detoxifies heavy
metals and defends damage from smoking, radiation and chemotherapy.
External sources of antioxidants are mainly from:
- vitamins – such as vitamin A, C, E which are good free radical scavengers
- minerals – such as selenium which acts synergistically with vitamin E and zinc which is a constituent of SOD. Zinc may help keep vitamin E levels in blood
and aid in absorption of vitamin A
- semi-essential antioxidants – examples are:
- CoQ10 – an antioxidant that may play an important role in generation of cellular energy, immune system stimulation and certain cardiovascular conditions. It
may exert its antioxidant effect by scavenging single oxygen
- Alphalipoic acid – may enhance the functioning of vitamin E, C and glutathione. It is both water and fat soluble and therefore known as the “universal” antioxidant
- Lutein – found in vegetables such as spinach and kale. It promotes long-term eye health. Lutein protects the eyes from damaging effects of the sun and as an antioxidant
from free radical damage which causes premature aging.
- DHEA – also known as the “mother hormone” because it is the raw material for most steroid hormones produced in the body. It acts as an antioxidant that may be effective
in preventing premature aging and stress
- Melatonin – may provide special protection to the nucleus within a cell that contains DNA. It may stimulate enzyme glutathione peroxidase. Often used as a sleep aid.
- herbs and plants – such as:
- flax hulls – contains the highest levels of botanical lignans called secoisolariresinol dyglucoside (SDG) in the botanical world. These are converted in the bowels into
mammalian lignans called enterodiol (ED) and enterolactone (EL) before they can be absorbed into the body. ED and EL are powerful free radicals scavengers. Flax hulls are powerful
antioxidants that boost the immune system significantly and a great source of dietary fibre
- pycnogenol – water base extract from pine bark. It is a potent antioxidant much more than vitamin C or E. The British Scientific Journal LANCET showed the risk of heart
disease was 50% lower in consumers of high amounts of pycnogenol
- grapeseed extract – a powerful antioxidant and free radical scavenger. It may inhibit enzymes that attack collagen and elastin which are the main structural materials of the arteries.
- Ginkgo biloba – a useful antioxidant known for its ability to enhance blood circulation.
- Green tea – contains catechin, which is an important ingredient that has antioxidant properties. It may protect against cancer, lower cholesterol levels, promotes fat reduction and aids
in reducing mental fatigue.
- Tumeric – main ingredient is curcumin which traditionally is an anti-inflammatory antioxidant and used to protect the liver against toxins. It may also protect against blood platelet
aggregation (“thick blood”).
Concentrated Natural Flax Hulls is an amazing natural free radicals scavenger. It contains the highest level of natural
organic botanical lignans called secoisolariciresinol glucoside or SDG which, when converted to mammalian lignans (ED and EL) by good bacteria, are powerful antioxidants and
potent free radical scavengers. At the same time it is a great dietary fibre and provides the daily value of Vitamin B12 in the form of Cobalamin.
